Automatic Transfer Switches

Transfer switches or Automatic Transfer Switches ATS allow an electrical load to be transferred between two sources. In most instances this is between the utility and a standby generator set if power ceases. There are two main types of transfer switches, manual which requires an operator to manually transfer the switch, while others are automatic, sensing a power outage and automatically throw itself.

Other types of automatic transfer switches are open or closed transition; service entrance rated or bypasses isolation. The choice of the transfer switch or switchgear is dependent upon the application for which the standby generator is designed.
